What causes missing teeth?
There are range of reasons why a person may be missing teeth. These include dental diseases and decay, congenital conditions, and injuries to the mouth or jaw.
Tooth DecayMost people lose teeth to dental diseases. Examples include severe tooth decay, gingivitis and advanced periodontal disease, all of which stem from poor oral hygiene. Improper tooth care allows plaque to build up in the mouth, producing an acid that irritates the gums, and eventually corrodes tooth enamel and dentine.
If you let it go untreated, tooth decay can cause serious damage. Advanced decay typically requires extensive treatment, such as root canal. In other cases, when the damage to a tooth is beyond repair, you may instead need to have the tooth removed completely. Missing from BirthSome people "miss out" on one or more teeth due to congenital conditions. In this case, regardless of oral hygiene habits, their body simply will not develop the tooth. This is called "hypodontia".
Hypodontia is usually connected to genetics, with multiple family members lacking the same teeth in each generation. However, some environmental factors may also contribute. |
Injury and AccidentsOthers may lose teeth as a result of accident or injury. Facial injuries are fairly common in high-contact sports, which is why we recommend custom-fitted mouthguards for sporting activity.
If an injury knocks out one or more teeth, there is a good chance that they can be restored with immediate attention. First aid and a prompt dental visit will maximise the chance for a successful repair. Even if an injury doesn't cause a tooth to fall out, it can still crack or loosen the tooth. It could also damage the tooth's root. These types of injuries might not be obvious– so if you notice blood or swelling in the mouth following a facial injury, organise a consultation with your dentist as soon as possible. |

How can dental implants help?Dental implants are an effective solution to missing teeth. They not only give you a more confident smile, but also lower your risk of experiencing periodontal problems and dental decay. In short, a tooth implant is a permanent and reliable way to counteract the long-term consequences of missing teeth.
A dental implant is a cylindrical, surgical-grade, titanium screw or post, which functions as an artificial tooth root. The implant is securely anchored into the jaw, in the socket of a missing tooth. Over time, the implants biologically bonds to your jawbone and becomes permanent. Thus, a dental implant provides a strong foundation for artificial replacement teeth. Implants can support multiple different types of artificial tooth, so your dentist will advise you on the most suitable choice. The right answer depends on the number of missing teeth, and and the part of the jaw from which they are missing. You might also have a choice between permanent (fixed) replacements, and removable replacements.
Whichever type of replacement you need, we ensure that they match the natural colour of your existing teeth. This allows them to blend in seamlessly and give your smile a consistent, natural appearance. We also offer a range of complimentary treatments to help you attain the smile you deserve. Your dentist must carefully plan the dental implant procedure, to ensure success through each stage. Furthermore, other dental or oral health issues may need addressing first, so they do not complicate the dental implant procedure. That's why it is crucial to arrange a consultation before commencing any dental implant procedures.
During consultation, your dentist will discuss the cost involved in your treatment plan, and suggest any other correlating dentistry treatments. At Engadine Dental, we are dedicated to providing our patients with functional and natural-looking replacements for missing teeth. |
Concerned about the cost of dental implants?
One major factor that keeps people from getting dental implants is the price. Many patients put off even consulting with their dentist, as they fear that the cost of the procedure will exceed their budget. This concern may stem from costly experiences they have had at other clinics, or from stories relayed by friends and family.
At Engadine Dental we are committed to offering transparent and affordable treatment plans, that are discussed up front, prior to commencement of treatment. We strive to keep our dental implant procedures at competitive prices, without compromising on quality materials. Engadine Dental only uses internationally-recognised implant brands, with lifetime quality guarantees, and we source all our implants and crowns from local Australian technicians and labs. |
Our staff are dedicated to providing each of our patients with the care required to properly restore teeth and secure their oral health. We maintain a low average cost for our dental implants by cutting our own profit margins; that's how we ensure we can satisfy each and every patient, and remain reputable.
