TMJ Pain

If you have TMD (Temporomandibular Disease) from the TMJ, then our dentists commonly work with patients suffering from TMD and can point you towards the right direction in a multi-disciplinary clinic or can help manage your pain and work carefully to achieve your dental goals

TMJ & Jaw Pain Relief:
Patient-Centred Care with a TMJ-Protective Approach

Do you wake up with a dull ache in your jaw, unexplained headaches, or tension in your neck? Do your jaw joints click, pop, or feel stiff when you chew?
You might be experiencing TMJ Disorder (TMD).
At Engadine Dental, our general dentists are TMD-aware. We understand that jaw pain isn't just uncomfortable—it impacts your sleep, your mood, and your overall quality of life. More importantly, we know that TMJ issues require a specialised touch. We are dedicated to helping you manage your symptoms safely while ensuring that any dental work you receive is completed in a highly TMJ-protective way.

Understanding TMJ vs. TMD

People often use these terms interchangeably, but they mean slightly different things:
  • The TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint): This is the actual hinge joint connecting your lower jaw to your skull, located just in front of your ears. It is one of the most complex, hard-working joints in your body.
  • TMD (Temporomandibular Disorder): This refers to the actual condition or cycle of dysfunction affecting the joint, its surrounding muscles, and the nerves.

Common Symptoms of TMD

Because the TMJ is surrounded by intricate muscle groups, symptoms can show up in unexpected places. You might be suffering from TMD if you experience:
  • Jaw pain or tenderness, especially in the morning or after eating.
  • Frequent tension headaches or migraines radiating from the temples.
  • Clicking, popping, or grating sounds when opening or closing your mouth.
  • A "locked" jaw or difficulty opening your mouth wide to yawn or chew.
  • Unexplained ear pain, ringing (tinnitus), or a feeling of fullness in the ears.
  • Worn down, flattened, or chipped teeth caused by chronic grinding. Teeth and fillings may break or chip easily.

The Role of a Night Occlusal Splint

For many patients, TMD symptoms are triggered or worsened by bruxism (unconscious teeth grinding or jaw clenching during sleep).
To give your jaw a chance to heal, our dentists frequently prescribe a custom-made Night Occlusal Splint.
Also known as a night guard or occlusal splint, this is a custom, highly precise appliance molded from rigid, medical-grade acrylic that fits comfortably over your top or bottom teeth while you sleep. This acts as a pair of supportive shoes for your teeth so you are supporting and not damaging your teeth and joints during your sleep.

How an Occlusal Splint Protects You:

  • Relieves Muscle Tension: The splint places your jaw in its natural, resting "home" position. This stops your facial muscles from overworking and allows them to fully relax overnight.
  • Absorbs Crushing Forces: By creating a smooth barrier between your upper and lower teeth, it redistributes the intense pressure caused by clenching, protecting your jaw joints from overloading.
  • Prevents Dental Damage: The splint acts as a shield, preventing your natural enamel and existing dental work (like fillings and crowns) from flattening, cracking, or breaking.

What It Means to Be a "TMJ-Aware" Dental Practice

If you have a sensitive or compromised jaw joint, standard dental procedures can sometimes trigger a painful TMD flare-up. That is why our team approaches general dentistry with a TMJ-protective philosophy.
We don't just look at your teeth in isolation; we look at the entire system—your bite, your muscles, and your jaw joints.
When you partner with us for your general dental care, we design your treatment plan to safeguard your joint health:
  • Frequent Rest Breaks: During longer appointments, we build in routine breaks so you can close your mouth, rest your facial muscles, and prevent the joint from over-stretching.
  • Bite-Conscious Restorations: Whether we are placing a simple filling or crafting a custom crown, we check and adjust your bite (occlusion). We ensure your new dental work coordinates perfectly with your TMJ, preventing uneven pressure.
  • Comprehensive Assessment First: Before initiating major treatments like orthodontics or cosmetic smile makeovers, we stabilise your joint symptoms first. A stable foundation leads to long-lasting, pain-free dental results.
  • Formulate a Protective Treatment Plan: Any restorations needed will be planned to be least invasive, less traumatic and most conservative so as we can reduce the amount of time you need to open your mouth. Our TMJ-friendly dentists are able to break down the appointments in a manageable plan to reduce the strain on your jaw joints. If your TMD is severe, we may need to refer to a multi-disciplinary team of TMJ specialists, physiotherapists and surgeon in order to stabilise the joint first, before we can commence dental treatment.
